On the afternoon of the 29th, protesters holding an "anti-Trump" rally near Gyeongju National Museum, where the South Korea-U.S. summit is being held, broke through a police control line and entered the area around the venue.
According to police and others, about 70 people who were attending an anti-U.S. rally at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond broke through a police blockade and approached to within about 100 meters of Gyeongju National Museum, where they are holding a protest.
The straight-line distance from Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond to Gyeongju National Museum is about 400 to 500 meters, and the protesters are said to have evaded police control and run 200 to 300 meters along a four-lane road to reach this point.
The protesters held a banner reading "NO Trump, withdraw investments in the United States." They at one point clashed physically with police, but there were no reports of serious injuries.
In case of contingencies, police set up a wall of vehicles using police cars on the road leading toward Gyeongju National Museum. When the protesters were blocked from entering the venue, they faced off with police outside the control line and shouted slogans.
To block the protesters' approach to the venue, police deployed about 700 officers to establish a control line and, in case of contingencies, set up a vehicle wall using police vehicles on the road leading toward Gyeongju National Museum. They also repeatedly broadcast warnings requesting a halt to the road occupation.
When the protesters did not end the standoff despite police warnings, police moved to forcibly disperse them. Of the roughly 70 rally participants, police moved and separated about 50 at the scene to a location about 70 meters away in the direction of Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. The remaining 20 or so participants are still continuing the protest while sitting or lying on the roadway.
U.S. President Donald Trump visited Korea on this day to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and is holding a summit with President Lee Jae-myung.
