From 10:29 a.m. for one minute on the 29th, sirens will sound across Seoul to mourn the victims of the deadly crowd crush in the nightlife district of Itaewon.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) said on the 28th that it will hold a memorial ceremony for the third anniversary of the 10.29 Itaewon disaster at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on the 29th.
About 2,000 people, including National Assembly speaker, leaders of political parties and religious organizations, civic groups, and the general public, are expected to attend, with Prime Minister Kim Min-seok representing the government. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) said, "This third-anniversary memorial is significant as it is the first time a government representative will attend to mourn the victims and console the bereaved families."
First, the memorial will begin at 10:29 a.m. At that time, memorial sirens will sound across Seoul. The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) plan to send text messages to citizens at 3 p.m. that day and at 9 a.m. on the 29th to prevent confusion among citizens due to the siren broadcast.
Following the memorial sirens, there will be a moment of silence, remarks by a representative of the bereaved families, a memorial video screening, memorial addresses, a reading of a poem for the third anniversary, greetings from the bereaved families of foreign victims, and a memorial performance.
Minister Yoon Ho-jung of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) said, "To ensure that a tragic accident like the deadly crowd crush in the nightlife district of Itaewon never happens again, we will put the people's lives first and build a safe nation."
