At about 5:35 a.m. on the 20th, a fire broke out in a second-floor unit of a five-story mixed-use building in Gwol-dong, Osan, Gyeonggi.
Fire authorities dispatched to the scene after a report issued Response Level 1 out of concern for mass casualties and began extinguishing the blaze. The fire was completely put out at 6:20 a.m., about 40 minutes later. Response Level 1 is an alert that mobilizes personnel and equipment from up to four nearby fire stations.
In the process, a woman in her 30s living on the fifth floor was seriously injured after falling from the building while evacuating. Eight other residents suffered injuries such as smoke inhalation, and 14 evacuated on their own.
The initial fire is believed to have started when a woman in her 20s, identified as A, a second-floor resident, used a lighter to kill an insect.
Police arrested A at the scene and are investigating the specific circumstances of the case.
