In connection with the homemade-gun murder case in Songdo, Incheon, that occurred on Jul. 7, the police commanders responsible have been disciplined.
According to materials Rep. Yang Bu-nam of the Democratic Party of Korea, a member of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee, received from the Korean National Police Agency on the 14th, former Incheon Yeonsu Police Station Chief Park Sang-jin received a reprimand. The reason was inadequate response at the time of the Songdo shooting incident. For the same reason, the former Yeonsu Police Station situation control officer was suspended for two months, and the situation team leader received a one-month pay cut.
At the time of the shooting incident, the Yeonsu Station situation control officer was reportedly not at the scene. However, under police guidelines, when a major incident occurs, the situation control officer must deploy to the scene with the initial response team, perform the role of commander, and then transfer command after the responsible section chief arrives. As controversy grew, the police placed the former station chief Park and the former situation control officer on standby assignment.
Meanwhile, the police said on the 10th that they had relieved the director of the National Police Hospital of duty after the director allegedly drove drunk and rear-ended another car in Seoul's Seocho District during the Chuseok holiday period. The director has been booked on charges of failure to take measures after an accident and driving under the influence under the Road Traffic Act and is under investigation by the Seocho Police Station.
