A fake video made with artificial intelligence (AI) that shows President Lee Jae-myung telling the public to invest in a specific platform is spreading, and police have launched an investigation.
The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency's cyber investigation unit said on the 14th that it began a pre-indictment inquiry into "EquiloomPRO," a fraudulent website posing as an AI-based investment platform. Equiloom claims it can generate stable revenue every month and is posting AI-made fake videos and interview clips on social media.
In the problematic video, a currently active anchor from a domestic media outlet appears and introduces Equiloom as if it were a government-certified investment platform. President Lee then appears and says it is "a chance to change your life," adding, "I guarantee that if you invest 300,000 won a month, you can earn 24 million to 30 million won."
In the video, President Lee also uses ungrammatical phrasing and speaks with awkward pronunciation. It is presumed to have been produced with AI by a foreigner unfamiliar with Korean.
Police confirmed two fake videos and interviews featuring President Lee. Police view the matter as serious because the AI-made fake news features the president's face and voice.
After promoting itself with AI-made videos, Equiloom prompts visitors to enter their name, email, and mobile phone number on the site. It then urges them to deposit at least 350,000 won.
