A man intoxicated with alcohol assaulted an incumbent Seoul city council member on a street in Gangnam, Seoul, and was taken into custody by police.
The Gangnam Police Station in Seoul said on the 13th that it arrested a man in his 40s, identified as A, as a red-handed offender on suspicion of injury.
A is suspected of assaulting B, a woman in her 40s who is a Seoul city council member from the People Power Party, at about 11:30 p.m. on the 11th on a street in Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam-gu.
B suffered bruises and abrasions and complained of back pain, and is expected to receive hospital treatment.
In a police interview, A reportedly said that he "committed the crime while drunk for no particular reason and did not know that B was a city council member." A preliminary drug test returned negative, according to the police investigation.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the case while leaving A without physical detention.
