A man in his 20s who assaulted an acquaintance after saying he would repay borrowed money if he won a fight received a suspended prison sentence.
According to the legal community on the 9th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Busan District Court Seobu Branch (Presiding Judge Kim Joo-gwan) sentenced A, a man in his 20s indicted on charges including violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (retaliatory threats, etc.), injury, and assault, to one year and six months in prison, suspended for three years.
When acquaintance B demanded repayment of 4 million won that he had lent, A said, "If you fight me with bare hands and beat me, I will repay the money," and called him out to Gupo Station in Busan. He is accused of assaulting B and causing injuries requiring 11 weeks of treatment.
When a police investigation began over the case, A also faced charges of repeatedly threatening B to induce him to withdraw the complaint.
The court said, "In light of the method and details of the defendant's crimes and the circumstances after the crimes, the defendant's culpability is quite heavy," adding, "We determined the sentence in consideration of factors such as the defendant reaching a settlement with the victim."
