Traffic congestion is continuing on major expressways as homebound drivers head back to the capital on the afternoon of Chuseok.
According to the Korea Expressway Corporation on the 6th, as of 6 p.m. today, the travel time by passenger car from tollgates of major cities nationwide to Seoul is 5 hours 30 minutes from Busan, 5 hours 50 minutes from Mokpo, 5 hours 40 minutes from Gwangju, 5 hours 10 minutes from Ulsan, 4 hours 30 minutes from Daegu, 3 hours 30 minutes from Daejeon, and 3 hours from Gangneung.
The time it takes from Seoul to major cities nationwide is 5 hours 30 minutes to Busan, 5 hours 10 minutes to Ulsan, 4 hours 30 minutes to Gwangju and Daegu, 4 hours 10 minutes to Mokpo, 2 hours 50 minutes to Daejeon, and 2 hours 40 minutes to Gangneung.
On the Gyeongbu Expressway toward Seoul, vehicles are unable to speed up over 3 km near Waegwan–Chilgok Service Area, 15 km from near Yeongdong to near Okcheon Tunnel No. 3, 10 km from near Okcheon to near Daejeon, 28 km from Cheongju to near Mokcheon, 24 km from Cheonan to near Anseong Service Area, and 12 km from Geumto Junction to Banpo.
Toward Busan, congestion is occurring over 9 km from Bukcheonan to near Cheonan, 2 km from near Cheonan Junction to Mokcheon, 4 km near Cheonan Hodu Service Area, 14 km from near Nami Junction to Jugam Service Area, 10 km from Okcheon Service Area to Okcheon Tunnel No. 4, 1 km at Dong Gimcheon IC, 12 km from near Namgumi to Chilgok Logistics, 1 km near Geumho Junction, 13 km from Gyeongju to near Hwalcheon, and 7 km from Seoulu Junction to near Tongdosa Service Area.
On the Seohaean Expressway toward Seoul, traffic is backing up 8 km from Gochang to Seonunsan, 13 km from Donggunsan to near Dongseocheon Junction, 3 km near Gwangcheon, 22 km from Dangjin Junction to the Seohae Bridge, 5 km from Maesong Service Area to Palgok Junction, and 4 km from Iljik Junction to Geumcheon.
On the Jungbu Expressway toward Hanam, vehicles are moving slowly over 4 km near Seocheongju, 11 km from near Jincheon Tunnel to near Jincheon, 10 km from near Iljuk to Moga, and 12 km from near Gyeonggi Gwangju Junction to near Jungbu Tunnel No. 1.
On the Yeongdong Expressway toward Gangneung, congestion is seen over 7 km from near Banwol Tunnel to Bugok, 5 km from near Maseong Tunnel to Yongin, and 4 km from near Yeoju Service Area to Yeoju Junction.
The expressway corporation expects the congestion toward hometowns to ease between 11 p.m. today and 12 a.m. on the 7th. The congestion toward the capital is expected to clear between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on the 7th.
