About 130 shells were belatedly found at the construction site for the new Yangpyeong Police Station building in Gyeonggi Province. The shells are presumed to have been used during the Korean War.
According to the Yangpyeong Police Station on the 1st, at about 11:20 a.m. on the 15th of last month, a report came in that several 60-millimeter-long shells had been found on the parking lot site within the construction site for the new Yangpyeong Police Station building in Yangpyeong-eup, Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province. At the time, 5 to 6 mortar shells were found at the site, and afterward the military sent an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team to search the area, discovering about 130 additional shells of similar size, including mortar shells.
The discovered shells were heavily rusted, and no risk of explosion was detected.
The military plans to conduct additional searches around the spot where the shells were found soon. The police believe the shells were used during the Korean War and handed them over to the military.
A police official said, "The shells are presumed to have been stored together in a box in the past," and added, "Because the new Yangpyeong Police Station building is almost complete, this issue will not delay the completion date scheduled for the second half of this year."
