The special counsel investigating Kim Keon-hee said on the 23rd it will extend its investigation period by 30 days until the 24th of next month. Earlier, the special counsels on insurrection and on the Marine's death in the line of duty also extended their investigation periods by one month.
The special counsel said that it "decided to extend the investigation period by 30 days tomorrow." Under the special counsel law, the Kim Keon-hee special counsel can investigate for 90 days and extend the period twice, 30 days each. The 90-day investigation period ends at the end of this month, so it decided on a one-time extension.
With the Cabinet approving the amendment to the special counsel law that day, the maximum investigation period for a special counsel increased by 30 days from the previous 150 days to 180 days. After this 30-day extension, the Kim Keon-hee special counsel can extend two more times by 30 days each and continue the investigation through December.
Earlier, the special counsel on the Marine's death in the line of duty extended its investigation period by 30 days 4th, and the insurrection special counsel did so this month.
