A man in his 40s was sentenced to prison for attempting to murder his mother in her 60s by stabbing her after she nagged him. The man was said to have harbored resentment toward his mother because he was swindled out of several hundred million won that he had invested through her.
On the 21st, according to the legal community, the 11th Criminal Division of the Ulsan District Court (Presiding Judge Park Dong-gyu) sentenced A, a man in his 40s who was brought to trial on a charge of attempted parricide, to four years and six months in prison.
The court said, "This crime inflicted severe injuries and aftereffects on the victim," and added, "However, we took into account that the defendant admitted to all the charges, acted impulsively, and did not carry out additional attacks."
A was indicted on charges of attempting to murder his mother, who is in her 60s, by cursing at her and stabbing her with a weapon at their home in Ulsan in February this year.
At the time, A asked his mother to "set the table for drinks," but, after being nagged, got angry and committed the crime, according to the investigation. The mother, though stabbed in the abdomen, did not go to the hospital immediately to conceal her son's crime. Two days passed in that condition, and when her condition worsened, she was taken to a hospital via 119 and underwent emergency surgery.
Meanwhile, A was found to have fallen into online gambling after losing about 200 million won he had saved while working nine years ago, which he had invested in real estate through his mother but was swindled out of. He was eventually fired from his job last year over gambling issues and had often been drinking at home since then.
