At about 7:37 a.m. on the 20th, a fire broke out in a unit on the ninth floor of an 11-story corridor-style apartment building in Hyangnam-eup, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, and A, a resident in their 60s, jumped and died.
According to the fire authorities, resident A was attempting to extinguish the flames with a fire hose in the ninth-floor corridor when fire trucks and police arrived at the scene. Firefighters determined there was someone inside, evacuated A to the first floor, and decided to force open the door to begin suppression.
However, A reportedly did not evacuate and suddenly threw themself down. A was transported to a hospital in cardiac arrest but ultimately died. The fire was put out in just over 10 minutes.
Police said, "We will need to investigate further to determine why A did not evacuate and jumped," and added, "It was confirmed that no one was inside the home at the time of the fire."
Police are investigating the details based on witness statements and other sources.
