On the 18th, the special counsel investigating Kim Keon-hee is conducting a search and seizure at the People Power Party's central headquarters in connection with the "Unification Church mass membership" suspicion.
In a media notice that day, the special counsel said, "We visited the People Power Party headquarters to voluntarily obtain materials on whether Unification Church members joined the party."
The search and seizure of the People Power Party's central headquarters is related to suspicions that Jeon Seong-bae, known as Geonjin-bubsa, and Yoon Young-ho, former worldwide headquarters chief of the Unification Church, sought to bring in large numbers of Unification Church believers ahead of the People Power Party convention in January 2023 to make Kweon Seong-dong, a People Power Party lawmaker, the party leader.
There were also allegations that Jeon, during the 2022 local elections, lobbied Kweon, then the People Power Party floor leader, and others for nominations including the Bonghwa County chief in North Gyeongsang.
Earlier, the special counsel also attempted search and seizure on the 13th and 18th of last month, but it fell through. At the time, the People Power Party strongly resisted, saying, "We cannot hand over the entire party membership list."
