The perpetrator in the case of a Taiwanese female YouTuber assaulted on the streets of Hongdae in Mapo-gu, Seoul, has been confirmed to be a Korean man, not a Chinese national.
Mapo Police Station said that at about 4:40 p.m. on 17th, a mutual assault occurred after a scuffle between a Taiwanese woman, identified as A, and a Korean man on the streets of Hongdae.
Initially, police said they had received a report that a man in his 20s with Chinese nationality assaulted two people, including a Taiwanese female YouTuber, in connection with the case that day.
The incident in question began at about 5:20 a.m. on 14th near Hongdae when a man assaulted two people, including A, a Taiwanese female YouTuber. Immediately after the incident, A claimed on social media (SNS) that an unknown Korean man attempted physical contact and assaulted her when she refused. As the account was reported by local broadcasters in Taiwan, the controversy spread.
After media inquiries continued, police said the perpetrator was a Chinese national, but A wrote again on SNS that "the perpetrator is Korean," adding, "Police told me to go home and rest without even checking closed-circuit (CC) TV."
Hundreds of malicious comments were posted on A's SNS, with the tenor of "anti-Korean sentiment that treats Korean men like criminals." Even so, A did not back down and went back to Mapo Police Station on the afternoon of 17th, and police ultimately acknowledged there had been confusion.
However, police explained that, contrary to A's claim, the case was closed because both parties at the scene expressed that they did not want punishment.
