Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Education Choi Gyo-jin said on the 16th, "The high school credit system is an essential system for nurturing talent," while also noting, "I understand there are many difficulties in the field."
Minister Choi said this at a roundtable held at the Enford Hotel in Cheongju to discuss opinions with provincial and metropolitan superintendents of education on improving the high school credit system. On this day, Minister Choi met a provincial or metropolitan superintendent of education for the first time since taking office.
Minister Choi said, "After the decision to introduce the high school credit system in 2017, over the past 8 years, through the operation of research and leading schools, all high schools are implementing the high school credit system this year," adding, "There are positive changes, such as expanded subject selection opportunities for students and increased educational attention from schools to students with low academic achievement."
He added, "The burden of instruction and assessment following subject guidance is very large, and I understand there have been many difficulties in the field due to the burden of remedial guidance for students who have not reached the minimum level of achievement and confusion stemming from changes in attendance processing methods."
Minister Choi said, "In response, since Jul. we have formed an advisory committee that includes students, teachers, and parents," adding, "We are preparing improvement measures that can ease the burden on schools, strengthen support for students' career and academic planning, and bridge gaps between regions and schools."
He continued, "I would like to share the current status of the high school credit system and discuss improvement measures through this meeting," and said, "Please offer candid opinions so that the high school credit system can take root in the field as originally intended."
