Jin Seong-man (85), a member of the male vocal quartet Johnny Brothers who sang Red muffler, a hit in the 1960s, has died.
Jin died of a chronic illness on the 13th (local time) in Los Angeles (LA), California, in the United States.
He is survived by his wife, Kim Ji-ae, and three daughters. Kim is the younger sister of actor Kim Ji-mi. The funeral will be held in the United States.
The deceased was born in March 1940 in Iksan, North Jeolla, the eldest of three sons and one daughter. In 1963, as part of the first cohort at Dong-A Broadcasting, he began working as a voice actor and formed Johnny Brothers with Kim Jun, Yang Yeong-il, and Kim Hyeon-jin, who came from the Yegrin Band. Johnny Brothers won the top prize at the Dong-A Broadcasting vocal ensemble contest. The following year, as the theme song Red muffler from a film of the same title became popular, they rose to public fame.
Other hits included The miller's second daughter, Hey, farmer Ana, Hwang the rich man of Mapo, and Horizon. Johnny Brothers disbanded in 1968 to focus on individual activities.
He also worked as a film producer. In 1986, he served as head of Jimmy Film, founded by Kim Ji-mi. He produced Orange nation, Myeong-ja, Akiko, Sonya, and Water nation.
