Overnight on the 6th, a heavy rain, which occurs once in 200 years, fell in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, and Seocho, Chungcheongnam-do. As a result, damage to residents has been reported. This rain is expected to continue until the afternoon of the 7th, centered around Jeolla, raising concerns of additional damage.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, around 1 a.m. on that day, heavy rain of 152.2 mm per hour fell in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do. This is the heaviest rain recorded nationwide this year. It is also the highest hourly precipitation since weather observations began in Gunsan in 1968. Around the same time, 137 mm of rain poured in Seocho, Chungcheongnam-do.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said, "Both Gunsan and Seocho experienced record-breaking rainfall that tends to occur once every 200 years." Additionally, it noted, "The band-shaped precipitation system that flowed in from the Yellow Sea stayed over Chungcheongnam-do and Jeollabuk-do."
Heavy rain has been falling in Gunsan and Seocho since the night before. From 8 p.m. on the 6th to 9 a.m. on that day, the accumulated precipitation was recorded as 296.4 mm in Gunsan and 257 mm in Seocho. Other major areas in Jeolla also received significant rainfall: ▲ Iksan 255.5 mm ▲ Wansan 189 mm ▲ Gimje 180 mm ▲ Wanju 165 mm ▲ Buan 134.7 mm ▲ Jinan 131 mm.
Significant damage was reported due to the heavy rain. Train operations on the Iksan-Jeonju line were suspended from 6:20 a.m. for about 3 hours and 40 minutes because some sections of the track were flooded. Jeonju city informed about 40 residents from Jin-gi village in Songcheon 2-dong, Deokjin-gu to evacuate to a nearby school. In Gunsan, 26 commercial buildings were flooded, and 8 dwellings were submerged in Jeonju, Iksan, and Gimje. The Jeollabuk-do Fire Department reported 199 incidents related to the heavy rain as of 6 a.m. that day.
However, the heavy rain warning that had been in effect in Gunsan, Iksan, and other areas was lifted at 10 a.m. The Korea Meteorological Administration stated, "Up until the afternoon of the 7th, there may be places in Jeolla with rain accompanied by gusts, thunder, and lightning, with rates of 30 to 50 mm per hour."
