A mother cow raised at a Hanwoo farm in Hapcheon County, Gyeongnam, has attracted attention for giving birth to twin calves three times in the past three years.
According to Hapcheon County on the 4th, the mother cow raised at a Hanwoo farm in Sogbaek-myeon gave birth to a set of female triplet calves in 2022, followed by a set of female twins in 2023, and then a pair of male twins on the 24th of last month. Thus, this mother cow has given birth to a total of seven calves across three deliveries.
The newly born male twins weighed around 25 kg each at birth and are growing steadily. The mother cow is also recovering healthily after giving birth.
The owner of the farm, Lee Soon-ho, noted, "It is very rare to have a case of triplet calves born consecutively three times." Cows are typically single-borne animals, and it is common for them to give birth to one calf at a time. The probability of twin calves is less than 5%.
It is known that the occurrence of twin births is difficult due to various risk factors, including the physiological burden on the mother cow and health issues for the calves.
A representative from Hapcheon County stated, "It is extremely unusual for a regular Hanwoo, not a cloned embryo recipient, to give birth to twins three times in a row," and assessed it as "an example that demonstrates the health and excellent breed management of Hapcheon Hanwoo."
