This summer, Gangwon's East Coast beaches have shown the largest crowd since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gangwon Province announced on the 2nd that a total of 8,652,08 visitors to 83 beaches in the province was recorded this summer, marking an 11.3% increase compared to the same period last year (7,774,956 visitors).
In particular, the Gangneung area, facing its worst drought, drew 3,066,872 visitors, a 20.8% increase from the previous year, even as it struggled with water supply disruptions. It attracted the most visitors among East Coast beaches, resulting in a significant increase in water usage at one point.
During the peak of summer vacation, Gangneung's daily water usage reached between 100,000 and 110,000 tons. However, it is currently maintained at around 85,000 tons, down about 15%.
Donghae, Sokcho, Samcheok, Goseong, and Yangyang also recorded a visitor increase of 2.8% to 13.6% compared to last year. In particular, the six themed beaches of Jumunjin Camping Beer, Donghae Mangsang Child-Friendly, Sokcho Night Content, Samcheok Family-Friendly, Goseong Ban Beach Pet-Friendly, and Yangyang Naksan Beach Market saw over 2.62 million visitors, a 13% increase from last year.
Gangwon Province has deployed over 630 safety personnel to prevent accidents. Additionally, harmful organism prevention nets have been installed at major beaches, reducing jellyfish sting incidents from 618 to 2.
Kim Kwon, the director of the Gangwon Province Tourism Bureau, noted, "I thank the tourists visiting the East Coast and the beach officials. Based on this year's achievements, we will create safer and more enjoyable beaches next year."
