Former Daeyu Winia Group Chairman Park Young-woo, who is undergoing a second trial for allegedly failing to pay employees' wages and retirement allowances totaling over 40 billion won, reportedly applied for release on bail again as of the 1st. Previously, after receiving a four-year prison sentence in the first trial, Park applied for bail in May while the second trial was ongoing, but the court rejected the request.
Park filed a request for bail on the 26th of last month with the Suwon High Court's Criminal Division 2-3 (Judges Park Kwang-soo, Kim Min-ki, and Kim Jong-woo). The date for the bail hearing has not yet been set. It is reported that Park's appeal detention expiration deadline is around early September.
Park was arrested and indicted in March of last year for allegedly failing to pay approximately 47 billion won in wages and retirement allowances to over 800 employees of WINIA Electronics and WINIA, in collusion with current and former CEOs of affiliates from October 2020 to December 2023.
In February, the first trial sentenced Park to four years in prison. The first trial court noted, "The wages of workers are also connected with the livelihood of their families," adding, "Many workers are petitioning for severe punishment of the defendant, and considering the suffering of their families, a strict penalty is necessary." The prosecution sought a ten-year prison sentence for Park in the first trial.
Both Park and the prosecution appealed against the first trial verdict. Park applied for bail to the court on May 19 while the second trial was ongoing, but the court dismissed it in July.
