A woman in her 20s, identified as A, died while trying to rescue a man, B, who had fallen into the water at a beach in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province. B, who received a life jacket from A, got out of the water and survived.
According to the fire authorities on the 31st, the incident occurred around 12:23 p.m. the previous day at Hajodae Beach in Hyunbuk-myeon, Yangyang County, when A tried to rescue a drowning person.
A jumped into the sea to deliver a life jacket after hearing B's calls for help, but she encountered an accident.
A safety officer who was present at the scene immediately entered the water and rescued A. Subsequently, the Gangneung Marine Police Station and fire authorities performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using an automated external defibrillator (AED) on A before transferring her to a hospital, but she died.
C, a friend of A in her 20s, also entered the sea and fell into the water. Fortunately, she is in a non-critical condition.
B is reported to have received the life jacket and exited the water by himself.
Hajodae Beach closed on the 24th. However, as the heat persists, tourist activity continues, prompting four safety officers to remain on the beach until that day.
The Gangneung Coast Guard is investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
