The prosecution has sought life imprisonment for a shaman in her 70s accused of brutally murdering her niece with charcoal fire.
On the 28th, the prosecution sought life imprisonment for shaman A (79, female) during the sentencing hearing held by the 16th Criminal Division of the Incheon District Court, presided over by Director General Yoon Yi-jin, on charges of murder.
The prosecution also requested that the court impose prison terms of 15 to 20 years each on four accomplices, including A's children, who were charged with the same offense, and seven years on two others accused of aiding the murder.
A and others were indicted for murdering 30-year-old B at a restaurant in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, using charcoal fire on September 18 last year.
A reportedly prepared the crime after her niece B expressed her intention to leave her side, saying, 'We need to exorcise the evil spirits.'
He is believed to have called his children and followers to tie B to a metal structure and applied the heat of charcoal to her body for three hours.
B lost consciousness while complaining of pain and was taken to the hospital on the day of the incident, but died the next day from multiple organ failure due to burns.
The investigation revealed that A had mentally dominated his followers for a long time, claiming that real-world problems must be solved through rituals or offerings.
Earlier, the police sent A and others to the prosecution on charges of injury leading to death, but the prosecution indicted them for murder after further investigation.
