The special prosecutor announced on the 28th that they plan to summon officials from the National Human Rights Commission starting next week for investigation. Some officials from the National Human Rights Commission are facing allegations of abuse of power against Colonel Park Jeong-hoon, who was the head of the investigation team for the Chae Hae-byeong case.
During a morning briefing that day, Special Prosecutor Jeong Min-young said, "The special prosecutor is investigating illegal activities such as neglect of duty and abuse of power that occurred at the National Human Rights Commission at the time of the Chae Hae-byeong death case." He added, "Next Monday, we plan to investigate former National Human Rights Commission Military Human Rights Investigation Bureau Chief Park Gwang-woo's acting role," and noted, "On Wednesday next week, we will investigate former National Human Rights Commission Secretary General Park Jin."
Special Prosecutor Jeong noted, "Colonel Park, who began to be investigated for mutiny in August 2023, applied to the National Human Rights Commission for a human rights infringement complaint and emergency relief." He added, "This application was dismissed, and it was revealed that Kim Yong-won, the military human rights protector from the National Human Rights Commission, had communicated with then-Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seob during this process." He continued, "Colonel Park's application was not even submitted to the plenary committee, which also raises issues of procedural illegality."
Special Prosecutor Jeong said, "Until now, we have only been reviewing relevant materials provided by the Human Rights Commission and summoned some officials for witness questioning, but starting next week, we will conduct thorough witness investigations."
