On the 28th, Kim Keon-hee's special prosecutor's office requested an arrest warrant for Kweon Seong-dong, a member of the People Power Party, at the court.
The special prosecutor's office noted in a statement that it requested the arrest warrant for Representative Kweon Seong-dong on the afternoon of the 28th. The warrant reportedly includes allegations that Representative Kweon violated the Political Funds Act.
The special prosecutor's office believes that Representative Kweon received illegal political funds from a former leader of the Unification Church, related to bribery allegations. Previously, the special prosecutor's office arrested and indicted Yoon Young-ho, the former head of the Unification Church's global headquarters, on the 18th for violating the Political Funds Act, as he was reportedly found to have directly handed cash of 100 million won to Representative Kweon.
Additionally, allegations have emerged that Jeon Seong-bae, known as the 'money shaman', and the former head of the Unification Church attempted to enroll a large number of Unification Church members in the People Power Party ahead of the party's convention in January 2023, aiming to make Representative Kweon the party leader.
Earlier, on the 18th of last month, the special prosecutor's office conducted a search of Representative Kweon's residence, his National Assembly office, and his district office in Gangneung. In addition, they attempted to search the central headquarters of the People Power Party to secure its membership list, but the operation was unsuccessful.
Representative Kweon first attended the special prosecutor's investigation on the 27th. At that time, he stated to reporters upon his arrival, 'Even if the special prosecutor pulls a rash move, it cannot create a nonexistent crime, nor can it uproot the democracy of Korea and the foundation of the opposition party, the People Power Party.'
Subsequently, in response to reporters' questions asking, 'Have you ever received 100 million won in political funds from Yoon Young-ho, the former head of the Unification Church?' Representative Kweon stated, 'As I have clarified several times, I have not received any money or valuables from anyone affiliated with the Unification Church.'
