Mr. Jeon Han-gil showcased his influence, saying that the person who joins hands with him could be the next president. He also noted that if Chairperson Lee Jin-sook runs in next year's Daegu mayoral election, he would yield.
Mr. Jeon, who left for the United States on the 24th to cover the South Korea-U.S. summit, emphasized during a YouTube live broadcast he conducted late at night on the 27th (Korean time) in Washington that "the candidate Jang Dong-hyuk, supported by Jeon Han-gil, was elected as the party representative," asserting that he played a significant role in Jang's victory.
He added, "I will predict again. The person who supports Jeon Han-gil will become a local government head next year and may receive a nomination for the National Assembly in the future," and proclaimed loudly, "The person who supports Jeon Han-gil could even become the next president."
Mr. Jeon also introduced a post from former Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Kwang-jin, stating that "during next year's local elections, Chairperson Lee Jin-sook and I will compete for the position of mayor of Daegu," adding, "Chairperson Lee is my senior at Kyungpook National University," and stated, "Chairperson Lee should be the mayor of Daegu."
He remarked, "I don't seek nominations like that, but even if I were to be nominated, if Chairperson Lee Jin-sook runs for mayor of Daegu, I would unconditionally yield," indicating he has no desire for the position.
As interest in whether Jang Dong-hyuk would appoint Mr. Jeon as a nominated supreme committee member rose in political circles, Mr. Jeon sent a congratulatory message to Jang on the 26th, stating, "I will remain an ordinary party member and support from behind," alleviating some of Jang's burdens.
In response, Jang replied, "I am moved to tears. Let's join forces and confront Lee Jae-myung."
