The Yangpyeong Police Station said on the 26th that they apprehended a man in his 30s, identified as A, on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving) and transferred him on the 11th.
A is suspected of driving his Maserati around 20 km from a bar in Yangpyeong-eup, Yangpyeong County, to the Gangsan Second Tunnel on the Central Inland Highway while under the influence of alcohol around 12:30 a.m. on the 17th of last month.
While driving toward Namyangju, he fled after refusing to stop when a police officer responded to a report of suspected drunk driving.
Afterward, A's vehicle entered the Central Inland Highway and attempted to evade the police by speeding at 140-170 km/h.
On the day of the incident, a heavy rain warning was issued in Yangpyeong County. 67 mm of rain fell in a day, making the road very slippery.
At that time, B's cargo truck, which was ahead, blocked the front of A's vehicle. Driving in the second lane of a dual carriageway, B intentionally obstructed both lanes as the patrol car and A's vehicle approached from behind, gradually reducing speed.
After entering the Gangsan Second Tunnel, B completely blocked both lanes next to the patrol car and came to a stop. With no way to go further, A was apprehended by the police on the scene.
During the pursuit, the police notified the trailing vehicles in advance through a loudspeaker to reduce their speed, preventing secondary accidents.
A was found to have driven with a blood alcohol concentration that could lead to license revocation.
The police planned to award a certificate of appreciation and a reward to B, who provided decisive help in arresting the suspect. However, B firmly declined, saying, "I just did what I had to do, and it resulted in no injuries in a dangerous situation."
A police official said, "It could have led to a fatal accident, but thanks to B, we were able to apprehend the suspect without injuring anyone," and added, "We will continue our traffic safety activities to maintain a peaceful daily life."
