A video has surfaced online showing a teacher slapping students in a high school classroom in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, eight years ago.
According to the South Jeolla Provincial Office of Education and others on the 20th, a video titled 'Corporal punishment video from Yeosu High School A, 2017-2018' was recently posted on an online community.
The video features a man, who appears to be a teacher, standing in front of a blackboard with three students lined up and slapping their faces for a total of 18 seconds.
The video description mentions that after 30 minutes into the class, some students were making noise because the teacher had not yet entered the classroom, and the teacher, who entered late, used violence against the noisy students.
The school, which confirmed the video late, acknowledged it and began to investigate the circumstances of the incident in collaboration with the provincial office of education.
The investigation revealed that the teacher involved had retired honorably in 2019, and it is known that both the victimized students and those who witnessed the incident have all graduated.
The school and education authorities have decided to report the perpetrator to the police on charges of child abuse and are also identifying the whereabouts of the victimized students.
They plan to conduct a survey of all students and review whether to proceed with an audit based on the results, as well as implement violence prevention education for the staff.
An official from the provincial office of education said, 'The violent acts in the video are shockingly unbelievable as if they happened recently,' and added, 'We will prepare measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring, as well as conduct an investigation into the case.'
