A woman in her 40s who stole expired jelly and distributed it to elementary school students has been referred to prosecutors.
The Incheon Bupyeong Police Station announced on the 18th that they have sent a woman in her 40s, identified as Ms. A, to prosecutors on charges of theft, applying only the theft charge after initially booking her for negligence.
Ms. A is suspected of stealing jelly that had expired by about a year from a supermarket in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, around 12:25 p.m. on June 11.
She distributed the stolen jelly to six 5th graders at a nearby elementary school, and four of them showed symptoms such as nausea and were taken to the hospital.
In a police investigation, Ms. A stated, "I tried the jelly and it was fine, so I gave it to the kids."
The police initially booked Ms. A on charges of negligence, but decided not to pursue charges as the victims' guardians did not wish for punishment, applying only the theft charge.
A police official stated, "While investigating the route of the jelly purchase, we confirmed the theft, and there were no significant abnormalities according to the ingredient analysis."
