Bishop You Gyeong-chon Timoteo, an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Seoul, passed away on the 15th at the age of 63. Bishop You is the younger brother of former Minister Yoo In-chon.
According to the Archdiocese of Seoul, Bishop You fell asleep in the Lord due to illness at 12:28 a.m. that day at The Catholic University of Korea Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. Bishop You had undergone partial surgery on the bile duct, duodenum, and pancreas due to bile duct cancer last year and had been receiving chemotherapy.
Bishop You was born in Seoul in 1962, graduated from The Catholic University of Korea, and studied abroad at the University of Würzburg in Germany. He received priestly ordination in January 1992 from the Archdiocese of Seoul and earned a doctorate in theology from the University of Saint George in Frankfurt, Germany.
Pope Francis appointed Bishop You as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Seoul on Dec. 30, 2013. The following February, he officially received the bishopric and served as the coordinator for social pastoral care and the代理 bishop in the eastern Seoul region.
The Archdiocese of Seoul stated that Bishop You aimed to be a "priest among the lowly" and became a model for his fellow priests and younger clergy through his humility, simplicity, and consideration for the marginalized.
The mourning hall will be set up in the underground church of Myeongdong Cathedral, the bishop's seat, and visitors can pay their respects from 3 p.m. on the 15th. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on the 18th at Myeongdong Cathedral, co-officiated by the Korean bishops' conference and the clergy of the Archdiocese of Seoul, with Archbishop Jeong Soon-taek Peter presiding. The burial site is the clergy section of the Catholic Yongin Memorial Park in Mohyun-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
