Police have concluded that Jang Jae-won (26), who was arrested on suspicion of murdering his ex-girlfriend with a weapon in Daejeon, committed a planned crime and are wrapping up the investigation.
Yook Jong-myung, chief of the Daejeon West Police Station, noted at a briefing on the 12th that "there was a premeditated plan to kill the victim, and he appears to have also considered taking his own life afterward," adding, "The investigation will be concluded, and he is scheduled to be transferred to custody on charges of murder and other offenses on the 13th."
According to police investigations, Jang continued to provide financial support to victim A over four months, sending more than 3.4 million won for credit card payments, motorcycle lease fees, and living expenses during their relationship. The two were reportedly separated around November last year, but Jang attempted to maintain contact and continued financial support.
However, after A began to avoid contact and refused to meet, Jang, feeling that he had been 'used', planned to murder her by luring her to Busan under the pretext of changing the motorcycle registration.
On the 28th of last month, he pretended to be going to Busan with A while riding in a shared vehicle but scouted for a crime scene in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. However, he could not carry out the act and moved to Gimcheon before returning to Daejeon, where he wielded a weapon in front of A's house.
The weapon was confirmed to have been purchased in advance. Before the crime, he searched for methods of murder on his mobile phone and purchased herbicide twice, but police determined that it was not for the purpose of the crime.
Immediately after the crime, Jang fled to Gyeryong, South Chungcheong Province, and Gumi, but returned to Daejeon. Police reported that he attempted to approach the funeral home, inquiring about the news of A's funeral, to confirm whether "the victim was really dead," identifying himself as "the boyfriend." He later attempted to poison himself after leaving the scene.
Jang is reported to generally acknowledge the charges against him.
