Kim Keon-hee arrived at the Seoul Detention Center on the 7th to once again execute the arrest warrant for former President Yoon Suk-yeol.
The special prosecutor entered the Seoul Detention Center around 7:50 a.m. on that day. It had been six days since the first attempt to arrest former President Yoon was thwarted on the 1st, as he firmly refused.
During the first attempt to arrest, the special prosecutor also notified former President Yoon that they would complete the execution using physical force if necessary next time.
In a media briefing, the special prosecutor emphasized that they were merely trying to apply the same strategy as former President Yoon, who, as the leader of the special investigation team into the Park Geun-hye administration's corruption scandal in 2017, forcibly summoned Choi Soon-sil.
The Ministry of Justice also strengthened the execution of the arrest warrant that day. Minister Jung Sung-ho revealed that he had directed active cooperation in executing the special prosecutor's arrest warrant to ensure that "law and principle lead to strict and fair law enforcement."
Previously, the special prosecutor's first attempt to arrest former President Yoon on the 1st failed due to his objections. At that time, the special prosecutor explained that the execution of the arrest warrant was thwarted when former President Yoon refused to comply, lying on the floor without even putting on a prison uniform. In contrast, former President Yoon's side argued that he had briefly removed the uniform to cool off.
Former President Yoon is facing allegations of violating the Public Official Election Act by allegedly assisting former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Young-sun in securing a nomination for a by-election held that same year in exchange for receiving public opinion polls for free from political broker Myung-taek Gyun during the 2022 presidential election.
Meanwhile, former President Yoon has been detained at the Seoul Detention Center since being arrested by the special prosecutor investigating the insurrection and foreign exchange situation related to martial law on the 10th of last month. Since his arrest, former President Yoon has refused to attend investigations by the special prosecutor as well as trials.
