The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 6th that it will intensively crack down on illegal taxi activities targeting foreign tourists for 100 days during the vacation season and peak tourist season.
Since 2015, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has been organizing dedicated crackdowns to address illegal taxi activities.
However, some taxi drivers are reportedly continuing illegal activities by moving their locations to evade enforcement officials. Typical instances include refusing to pick up foreign passengers wishing to travel short distances, soliciting passengers by quoting high prices, and charging unreasonable fees targeting foreign customers trying to return to their accommodations late at night.
In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Government decided to promote measures that will strengthen on-site crackdowns and allow for improvements in taxi services. The areas targeted for enforcement include Incheon and Gimpo airports as well as major tourist areas like Myeongdong.
The main measures include ▲ mobilizing all enforcement personnel for concentrated on-site crackdowns over 100 days ▲ expanding participation crackdowns based on QR (Quick Response) surveys of foreign tourists (including citizens) ▲ improving the system such as enhancing taxi receipt labeling ▲ strengthening penalties for frequent complaint companies.
Yeojang-gwon, the director of the Seoul Transportation Office, said, 'We will implement effective on-site enforcement measures to rectify illegal taxi operations.'
