Former President Yoon Suk-yeol's couple's alleged intervention in nominations has led to the investigation of Choi Ho, a former Gyeonggi Provincial Council member, who was found dead around 3 a.m. on the 28th.
According to a report by Yonhap News on the 28th, the Pyeongtaek Police Station discovered the former council member dead in the mountains of Jisan-dong, Pyeongtaek. Earlier, his family had reported him missing to the police around 2 a.m. that day after he did not return home.
Police said he left home around 5 p.m. on the 27th and appears to have taken his own life in the mountains. No suicide note was found. A police official told Yonhap News, 'As of now, there are no indications of foul play,' adding, 'We cannot provide detailed information as it is an ongoing investigation.'
Former Council Member Choi was nominated as the People Power Party candidate for the mayor of Pyeongtaek during the June 1, 2022, local elections. In connection with this, the prosecution has been investigating allegations that the former president and his spouse pushed for former Council Member Choi, who is aligned with the 'pro-Yoon' faction, as a preliminary candidate during the nomination process.
