The prosecution has filed murder charges against a mother who publicly shared her experience of having an abortion at 36 weeks of pregnancy on YouTube and the doctor who performed the procedure.
On the 23rd, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office Criminal Division 3 (Director General Jeong Hyun) stated, 'Doctors A and B have been arrested and indicted on charges including murder after allegedly mediating between brokers and 527 mothers wanting abortions from August 2022 to July 2024 and pocketing 1.46 billion won in surgery fees.' Doctors A and B were also the main culprits in the 'murder of a 36-week fetus' case, where they delivered a fetus at 36 weeks via cesarean section last June and then killed it by placing it in a freezer.
The prosecution has applied murder charges against mother C, who had an abortion, but has indicted her without detention. At that time, C publicly shared her abortion experience on YouTube.
According to the prosecution, A performed abortions for hundreds of thousands of won for mothers who were refused abortion procedures at other hospitals (59 mothers who were 24 weeks pregnant or more) or did not want to leave medical records. Later, when A was unable to perform surgeries due to age, he had B, a university hospital doctor he got to know through an acquaintance, perform the abortions.
Additionally, the prosecution has indicted brokers D and E, who introduced and mediated a total of 527 patients to A over two years and received a total of 312 million won in return, on charges of violating medical laws without detention.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office stated, 'We will ensure that all revenue obtained from this case can be fully confiscated to raise awareness for crimes against humanity committed by disregarding life,' and 'We will do our utmost to strictly punish crimes that threaten the lives and bodies of citizens.'
