The Netflix drama 'Trigger' has faced controversy even before its release. It has garnered attention in connection with the arrest of a 62-year-old man on the 20th for allegedly shooting his son with a makeshift shotgun made from a steel pipe in an apartment in Songdo, Incheon, while preparing a birthday celebration. The drama deals with gun incidents.
Director Kwon Oh-seung of 'Trigger' said at the production presentation held at Hotel Naru Seoul MGallery in Mapo, Seoul, on the morning of the 22nd, "I feel heartbroken about the recent unfortunate incident. I regret it. I hope that such things do not happen in the future," adding, "The connection between this incident and 'Trigger' is a different issue."
In response to the question, "Is there a perspective that sees the person holding a gun in the work as glamorized?" Director Kwon replied, "Glamorizing crime does not make sense." He continued, "The characters in the work picking up guns show a different approach and outcome than what recently occurred," asserting, "I think the incident and the work should be clearly distinguished."
Separately from Director Kwon's explanation, the fan event live broadcast for 'Trigger' was suddenly canceled. Netflix was scheduled to conduct 'Trigger Talk & Shot' at 7:30 p.m. that day, but the planned online live broadcast was canceled. The Netflix side did not disclose the reasons for the cancellation.
'Trigger' depicts a situation where illegal firearms of unknown origin are delivered in gun-free South Korea, and gun incidents continue to occur. It is a gun disaster action thriller featuring two men who wield guns for their own reasons. Director Kwon explained, "It's a story where guns are legal in South Korea, and I imagined what it would be like if a gun were to be released in this frustrating reality." He added, "The difference from other actions is that here, guns are not just tools but the center of the story," noting, "I think different reactions will arise depending on who holds the gun."
The two main roles will be played by actors Kim Nam-gil and Kim Young-kwang. Kim Nam-gil stated, "'Trigger' is a story about life and a story about us," expressing a hope that audiences can empathize together.
