New Minister of Justice Jeong Seong-ho said on the 21st, "The next candidate for Prosecutor General must have a firm commitment and passion for prosecutorial reform."
Minister Jeong visited the National Seoul Memorial Cemetery around 9:20 a.m. that day and, after paying his respects, responded to reporters' questions about the qualifications of the Prosecutor General candidates, stating, "The most important thing is the will to protect the people's human rights and uphold the Constitution."
When asked by reporters, "Are you considering the cancellation of charges in the ongoing trial of President Lee Jae-myung?" Minister Jeong replied, "I am not at a stage to think about such issues yet," adding, "For now, I need to understand the tasks at hand and discuss with the executives how to conduct prosecutorial reform."
He also responded to questions about the potential pardon for former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk, stating, "Pardon is the exclusive right of the President," and said, "It seems inappropriate to comment on pardons right now as the Minister who just assumed office."
Minister Jeong wrote in the visitor's book at the memorial, "I will protect the human rights of the people and create a peaceful and safe country."
Minister Jeong is scheduled to hold an inauguration ceremony at the Government Complex Gwacheon at 11 a.m. that day.
