A man in his 60s, referred to as A (63), who is suspected of killing his son with a homemade gun in Songdo, Incheon, reportedly stated that he learned how to make firearms from YouTube.
According to police and other sources on the 21st, A was urgently arrested on suspicion of murder and violations of the law on the safety management of firearms, swords, and explosives. During police questioning that day, A reportedly stated that he learned how to make firearms from YouTube. However, he allegedly claimed that he purchased the ammunition used in the crime from another individual in the past.
A is said to have claimed that the reason for killing his son was due to family discord.
A is suspected of shooting and killing his son B, who is in his 30s, around 9:31 p.m. the previous day at an apartment on the 33rd floor in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. The day of the crime was A's birthday, and it is reported that B held a celebration with his wife, two grandchildren, and acquaintances.
A fled after the crime but was captured around 12:20 a.m. that day in Seoul and was transported to Incheon. Upon police investigation, it was determined that A used a homemade firearm in the shape of a pipe to fire two shotgun shells containing multiple metal pellets consecutively at B.
A reportedly stated in police questioning that he installed a bomb at his home in Sangmun-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul. A search by the police special forces found 15 explosive devices connected to ignition devices, including gasoline-filled plastic bottles, detergent containers, and milk cartons, which were reportedly set to explode at noon that day.
Police discovered not only the two homemade guns used in the crime in A's vehicle's front passenger seat and trunk but also 11 additional firearms and ammunition, along with five to six metal pipes found at his home.
