The police announced on the 21st that they have launched an investigation related to Kang Sun-woo, the nominee for the Minister of Gender Equality and Family, and his family.
A senior police official noted at a regular press briefing that they are handling six accusations related to the nominee by assigning them to the Gangseo Police Station and proceeding with the investigation of the accusers.
Kang is accused of causing a disturbance when he visited a hospital to see a family member who had been hospitalized around July 2023, during the COVID-19 pandemic, after the hospital restricted access due to preventive measures, arguing his status as a member of the National Assembly.
He also transferred his family to the A apartment in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, before the 22nd general election, but it was revealed that his family, excluding Kang, actually resided in the B apartment and C officetel in Jongno-gu, Seoul, raising suspicions about false residency registration. It is reported that he was accused of violations related to family registration laws, election laws, conspiracy and aiding, and obstruction of justice.
The police also stated that they received an accusation on the 1st regarding suspicions that Jeong Eun-kyeong, the nominee for the Minister of Health and Welfare, has investments in 'COVID beneficiaries,' assigning the case to the Yeongdeungpo Police Station for continued investigation of the accusers. It has been revealed that Jeong's spouse, a person surnamed Seo, continuously bought stocks related to COVID from Changhae Ethanol, a company that produces raw materials for hand sanitizer, during Jeong's tenure as the head of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Consequently, they were accused of abuse of power, breach of trust, and violations of the Conflict of Interest Prevention Act.
A police official stated that accusations against Lee Jun-seok, a member of the Reform Party, for committing verbal sexual violence during a televised debate in the last presidential election have also been completed with five accusations filed. Regarding a case where a key official of the Rebuilding Korea Party was sued for sexual harassment of a fellow official, they reported that a complaint was received at the end of April, and the Seoul Police Agency is investigating the victim.
Meanwhile, the police revealed that they had previously requested the submission of related documents concerning the raid by the Kim Keon-hee special investigation on the police agency on the 8th, stating that they had obtained a search warrant but were proceeding with procedures to secure the materials. They also mentioned that in the ongoing investigation concerning allegations related to former President Yoon Suk-yeol's power outages and water supply issues, they are cooperating to check whether necessary materials are available on their side.
As of today, a total of 80 police officers have been dispatched to the three special investigations: 40 to the 'insurrection special investigation,' 25 to the 'Kim Keon-hee special investigation,' and 15 to the 'fallen marine special investigation.' Each special investigation also includes one officer at the superintendent level.
