A (63), a man in his 60s accused of shooting and killing his son with a homemade gun at an apartment in Songdo International City, Yeonsu District, Incheon, was found not to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crime. It was also confirmed that he had no previous convictions or mental health issues.
Park Sang-jin, chief of the Yeonsu Police Station in Incheon, briefed on the investigation into the homemade gun murder case that occurred the previous day at 4 p.m. on the 21st. Park noted, "A was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crime and was normal in drug tests" and added, "The motive for the crime, confirmed during the suspect interrogation today, was determined to be familial discord." However, he added, "Details remain unclear as he is avoiding giving statements."
According to the police, at around 9:31 p.m. the previous day, A is suspected of firing three shots from a pipe-type homemade gun at his son B's abdomen from the 33rd floor of an apartment in Songdo International City, Yeonsu District, Incheon, resulting in his death. Two of the shots penetrated his abdomen, and one hit the entrance door. A fled the scene after the crime.
The day of the crime was A's birthday, and it was reported that his son B had held a party with B's wife, two grandchildren, and acquaintances present. Park said, "A left the gathering for a moment, saying he would go out for a bit, then came back with the homemade gun stored in his vehicle and shot his son." B's family reportedly fled to a room after the incident and called the police.
According to the police, A divorced his ex-wife and B's mother 20 years ago. It is reported that B maintained contact with his father A even after the divorce.
The police were dispatched to the scene based on a 112 report received immediately after the crime and confirmed that A had used a rental car by tracking his movement. They urgently apprehended A around midnight on the following day on a road near Bangbae-dong, Seocho District, Seoul. At the time of his arrest, A was found in possession of a firearm.
During the arrest process, A reportedly stated, "There is an explosive device designed to detonate at noon on this day at my home in Sangmun-dong." In response, police special forces evacuated a total of 105 people, including 69 residents of the apartment and 36 commercial workers, to nearby health centers and shelters between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. They subsequently proceeded to remove flammable substances such as thinner from his residence.
The police confirmed that 13 steel pipes were used as gun barrels in the crime. Of these, 2 were found at the scene of the incident, while the remaining 11 were discovered inside A's vehicle. The pipe gun was designed for single-shot use, loading one bullet into each barrel, attaching it to the handle, and firing. According to police investigations, A learned how to make firearms via YouTube and purchased the relevant materials online, which were then processed at a workshop to create the homemade gun.
In the police investigation, A stated that he purchased the bullets approximately 20 years ago for the purpose of taking extreme measures. A total of 86 live rounds were found in his vehicle.
The police plan to request an autopsy from the National Forensic Service to determine the exact cause of death for B. Additionally, police profilers from Incheon, Seoul, and Gyeonggi South Police Agency have been deployed for psychological analysis of A, and they are also checking for any mental health history.
Along with this, the police will connect B's wife and two children with psychological counseling to help them overcome trauma and will coordinate with relevant agencies to support the medical expenses of the victims.
A police official stated, "We are investigating the specifics of the incident involving A, and we plan to apply for an arrest warrant soon."
