Seventeen people have died due to heavy rainfall and landslides that have continued since the 16th. The casualties were concentrated in the county of Sancheong in South Gyeongsang Province, where the landslides occurred. The number of casualties may change depending on the progress of rescue operations.
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (CDC) and the Fire Agency on the 20th, as of 6 p.m. that day, there have been 17 deaths and 11 missing persons nationwide due to heavy rainfall over the past five days.
Compared to the count at 11 a.m. that day, the death toll increased by three, while the number of missing persons decreased by one. The additional deaths occurred in Sancheong, South Gyeongsang Province, with two people, and one in Bukgu, Gwangju.
By region, the deaths include one in Osan, Gyeonggi Province, two in Gapyeong, two in Seosan, two in Dangjin, ten in Sancheong, and one in Bukgu, Gwangju. The missing persons include one in Bukgu, Gwangju, five in Gapyeong, one in Pocheon, and four in Sancheong.
Damage to facilities has been identified as 1,999 public facilities and 2,238 private facilities. Due to the heavy rainfall, 9,782 households and 13,492 individuals were urgently evacuated from five provinces, with temporary housing provided to 1,629 households and 2,444 individuals.
From the 16th to 5 p.m. on the day, the total cumulative rainfall by region includes 793.5 mm in Sancheong, 699.0 mm in Hapcheon, 621.5 mm in Hadong, 617.5 mm in Gwangyang, 600 mm in Changnyeong, 584.5 mm in Ham-an, 578.3 mm in Seosan, and 552.5 mm in Damyang. The daily cumulative rainfall as of 5 p.m. that day includes 197.5 mm in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, 178.5 mm in Uijeongbu, and 154.5 mm in Yangju.
At 6 p.m. that day, the government downgraded the heavy rain alert level from 'serious' to 'caution' and lifted the 'emergency phase 3' of the CDC, three days after it was imposed on the 17th. This marked the first issuance of phase 3 since Typhoon Khanun approached in August 2023, after one year and 11 months.
The CDC stated, 'Currently, all heavy rain advisories and preliminary advisories have been lifted,' adding that 'some areas in Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungcheong, and inland North Gyeongsang Province may see some showers tonight.'
