Yoon Suk-yeol's attempt to be released has returned empty-handed.
According to the legal community on the 18th, the Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Appeal Division 9-2, presided over by Directors General Ryu Chang-seong, Jeong Hye-won, and Choi Bo-won, dismissed the bail review request filed by former President Yoon.
The court noted, "Based on the results of the suspect interrogation and the records of this case, it was determined that this request lacks merit and is therefore dismissed."
Former President Yoon was arrested and detained by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials in January, and after being released, was rearrested by the Special Prosecutor Team on Insurrection exactly four months later.
On the 10th, a warrant for his arrest requested by the Special Prosecutor Team was issued, and Yoon was detained at the Seoul Detention Center. He filed for a bail review on the 16th, just six days later.
In particular, former President Yoon argued, "Is there anyone who would destroy evidence for me now?" However, the court appeared to see a necessity to continue the investigation while he remains detained.
Moreover, former President Yoon cited his deteriorating diabetes and rising liver enzyme levels, which render him unable to eat or exercise, as reasons for needing to be released due to health concerns.
However, the court seems to have dismissed this as well, considering the response from the Seoul Detention Center that 'there is no issue with his mobility.'
During the hearing, the Special Prosecutor and former President Yoon's side engaged in a fierce courtroom battle over these issues, lasting approximately six hours, including recess time.
About four hours after the end of the hearing, the court rejected former President Yoon's request, siding with the Special Prosecutor Team.
As a result, former President Yoon will be subjected to the investigation of the Special Prosecutor Team while being detained at the Seoul Detention Center. His side has not released a separate statement regarding the dismissal decision on the bail review.
