The Ministry of Employment and Labor and police are conducting searches of the Incheon Environmental Corporation and the company involved in connection with the manhole death incident that occurred in Gyeyang District, Incheon, on the 16th.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor's Central Regional Employment and Labor Office and Incheon police stated that they have been conducting searches at five locations, including the headquarters and business offices of the Incheon Environmental Corporation and the contractor, since 9 a.m. that day.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor and police deployed over 50 investigators, including labor inspectors in charge of major industrial accident investigations and criminal police, for the search that day. They plan to secure evidence to verify violations of the Industrial Safety and Health Act, the Act on the Punishment of Serious Accidents, and the negligent homicide law.
This search is in response to the incident on July 6th, in which two people died during surveying work in a manhole located in Gyeyang District, Incheon. They were reportedly poisoned by harmful gases while investigating the sewer pipe status inside the manhole as subcontractors for a service commissioned by the Environmental Corporation.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor plans to confirm whether the Environmental Corporation effectively controlled, operated, and managed the surveying work site and project, as well as whether health measures were properly implemented while working in the confined space inside the manhole.
