On the 8th, the maximum daytime temperature in Gyeonggi's Gwangmyeong and Paju exceeded 40 degrees. This is the first time in July that temperatures have surpassed 40 degrees.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's Automatic Weather Station (AWS), the temperature in Shin-san-ri, Gwatang-myeon, Paju, recorded 40.1 degrees around 3:24 p.m. Additionally, the temperature in Cheolsan-dong, Gwangmyeong, was 40.2 degrees around the same time.
It is the second time that AWS temperature measurements have exceeded 40 degrees since August 4 of last year. At that time, the temperature in Jeomdong-myeon, Yeoju, recorded 40 degrees.
It has been uncommon for daytime temperatures to reach 40 degrees domestically. There hadn't been such a case since Daegu recorded a temperature of 40.0 degrees on August 1, 1942.
However, on August 1, 2018, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees in Hongseong, Bukchuncheon, Uiseong, Yangpyeong, and Chungju. Later, on August 14 of the same year, Uiseong's temperature rose above 40 degrees again. Following that, on August 5, 2019, the temperature in Goeam-myeon, Anseong, reached 40.2 degrees.
Since the start of modern weather observation in 1904, the highest temperature recorded in Korea is 41 degrees, which was noted in Hongcheon, Gangwon, on August 1, 2018.
