Acting Commissioner of the Korean National Police Agency Yoo Jae-sung visited the site of the Gungpyeong 2 underpass in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, on the 7th to mark the second anniversary of the Osong underpass disaster and the memorial week (7th to 15th).
The Korean National Police Agency noted that this was Yoo's first on-site activity since he was inaugurated as Vice Administrator of the Korean National Police Agency on the 30th of last month.
After commemorating the victims with a moment of silence, Yoo inspected the vehicle entry restrictions and emergency evacuation facilities at the underpass. He also urged the accompanying director of the public safety department of the Chungbuk Provincial Police Agency and the head of the Cheongju Heungdeok Police Station to ensure that an immediate response system is well prepared, as concentrated heavy rain has been forecast for the central region.
The Osong underpass disaster occurred on July 15, 2023, when the levee near the Gungpyeong 2 underpass broke due to heavy rainfall, causing river water to flow in and submerging 17 vehicles, including city buses, that were passing through the underpass, resulting in the deaths of 14 people.
