According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, from 6 p.m. on June 30 to 9 a.m. on the 1st, Seoul's minimum temperature remained above 25 degrees. Following the 29th of last month, the minimum temperature exceeded 25 degrees for the second consecutive night. The 29th was recorded as the first tropical night of the year in Seoul.
A tropical night is a phenomenon where the temperature does not drop overnight and the minimum temperature exceeds 25 degrees.
The number of tropical nights in Seoul has been increasing annually, from 13 days in 2020 to 21 days in 2021, 24 days in 2022, 25 days in 2023, and 48 days last year. In the last year, a tropical night occurred for 34 consecutive days from July 21 to August 23 in Seoul.
Tropical nights occurred across the country, including the metropolitan area of Seoul. Suwon in Gyeonggi Province recorded a minimum temperature of 25.4 degrees, and Dongducheon recorded 25.2 degrees. Also, tropical nights were observed in Donghae (25.5 degrees), Wonju (25.1 degrees), Sokcho (25.1 degrees), Daejeon (25.4 degrees), Gwangju (25.7 degrees), Pohang in North Gyeongsang Province (27.4 degrees), Uljin (26.3 degrees), Daegu (25.7 degrees), and Seogwipo (27.3 degrees) and Jeju City (25.7 degrees) on Jeju Island.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted that temperatures will be higher than the average (minimum 19-21 degrees; maximum 25-29 degrees) for the time being. As of 8 a.m. that day, the temperatures in major cities were 26.4 degrees in Seoul, 25 degrees in Incheon, 27.7 degrees in Daejeon, 27.2 degrees in Gwangju, 27.8 degrees in Daegu, 28.6 degrees in Ulsan, and 27.6 degrees in Busan. The forecast for the day's maximum temperature was 27-35 degrees.
