The police announced that, in relation to the recent spate of suicide attempts from high-rise buildings in Gangnam, they will increase the number of 'high-risk suicide buildings' in Gangnam from 19 to 31 for intensive inspections.
Park Hyun-soo, the acting chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, noted at a regular press meeting on the 30th, "For several years now, the field officers have mentioned that suicide attempts have been occurring like a trend," and added, "We are conducting preliminary checks on high-rise buildings around Gangnam Station and are recommending the installation of opening and closing devices." He also said, "We will take measures to ensure that areas with multiple high-rise buildings conduct inspection and prevention activities as needed."
Acting Chief Park further stated regarding preparations for summer disasters, "If heavy rain is expected, relevant function commanders and staff will be on standby," and said, "The entire police force is identifying vulnerable areas in advance and is in preparation by conducting preventive patrols." Specifically, the plan is to manage more than 720 vulnerable locations jointly with the Seoul city government, as well as to engage police stations' security, traffic, and mobile patrol units according to the field situation.
Acting Chief Park mentioned that after eight fatalities occurred in Seoul in 2022, there have been no casualties in 2023 and 2024, stating, "There were over 280 reports to 112 related to disasters last year, and there were no casualties. We will do our best in prevention activities this year to ensure there are no casualties."
