On the 27th, the Ministry of Employment and Labor held a meeting with the chief safety officers (CSOs) of the six major domestic steel companies.
The meeting, held in the morning, was chaired by Director General Choi Tae-ho and attended by the CSOs of six steel companies including POSCO, Hyundai Steel, Dongkuk Steel Mill, Seah Besteel, Seah Changwon Special Steel, and KG Steel.
The steel industry involves numerous high-risk operations, including handling heavy materials and flammable substances, leading to a high risk of serious accidents. Last year, 15 serious accidents occurred in the steel industry. The number of fatalities due to serious accidents has been reported as 15 in 2022, 16 in 2023, and 15 last year, indicating a consistent occurrence each year. So far this year, three people have died in the first quarter.
During the meeting, Director General Choi shared the government's commitment to reducing serious accidents in industrial sites. He also urged investments and improvement efforts from related industries for accident prevention.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor stated that it plans to implement strict measures through thorough supervision and investigation against corporations where serious accidents repeatedly occur.
