The Ministry of Education demanded on the 30th that the Daejeon City Office of Education impose severe disciplinary action against the principal of an elementary school in Daejeon, related to the incident in which a teacher killed a student on campus last February. Severe disciplinary actions include dismissal, termination, demotion, and suspension.
The Ministry of Education announced the results of the investigation into the Daejeon elementary student murder case.
According to the Ministry of Education's announcement that day, the principal of the school where the incident occurred was found to have been negligent in their responsibilities.
The Ministry of Education noted, "The principal failed to report the incident despite being advised by the Daejeon City Office of Education and others to notify the police immediately after the perpetrating teacher damaged their computer and exhibited threatening behavior toward a fellow teacher a few days prior. The perpetrating teacher's unusual behavior constituted a legal violation, but no report was made." It was also revealed that the principal was unaware of the teacher's unauthorized absence from work on the day of the incident.
Additionally, the Ministry of Education requested minor disciplinary action against the vice principal of the school and the director in charge of the educational support office overseeing the school.
The Ministry of Education determined that the vice principal had inadequately managed faculty duties. Reasons cited included ▲ failing to report the teacher's unauthorized absence to the principal ▲ not confirming whether the teacher had left for the day ▲ not sharing the teacher's unusual behavior with the caregiving staff and others.
The investigation also revealed that the director had received reports from the principal regarding the teacher's unusual behavior but failed to report them to superiors immediately. Furthermore, it was found that the investigation was concluded without even interviewing the perpetrating teacher during a visit to the school. Minor disciplinary actions include reprimands and salary reductions.
A representative of the Ministry of Education said, "We will make every effort to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future."
