Choi Eun-soon, the mother-in-law of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, has reportedly been under police investigation for allegedly illegally leasing farmland to others.
According to police on the 26th, the Southern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency's Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Investigation Team called Choi in as a suspect on the 7th for investigation on charges of violating the Farmland Act.
Choi is accused of illegally leasing two plots of farmland, totaling over 3,300 square meters, located in Yangpyeong-eup, Yangpyeong-gun, to local residents from 2021 to 2023.
He had owned the farmland since 2005, but it has been reported that he did not actually farm the land.
Earlier, the police investigated allegations that Choi acquired the farmland for real estate speculation; however, considering that the statute of limitations for related charges is five years, they decided not to pursue the case.
Subsequently, the police received a complaint from a civic group regarding the illegal leasing of farmland and have been conducting further investigations.
