Police announced that Kim Seong-jin (33), who killed or injured two women with a weapon at a supermarket in Mia-dong, Gangbuk District, Seoul, on the 22nd of last month, has been confirmed as a psychopath.
A police official noted during a regular press briefing at the Seoul Police Agency on the 19th that "Kim Seong-jin's armed rampage was analyzed as a crime with abnormal motivation and received analysis results that it corresponds to being a psychopath."
Earlier, Kim Seong-jin swung a weapon inside a supermarket in Mia-dong at around 6:20 p.m. on the 22nd of last month. As a result of the incident, a woman in her 60s died, and a female employee in her 40s was injured. After committing the act, Kim Seong-jin walked into a nearby alley to smoke a cigarette and voluntarily reported to the police. According to police investigations, Kim Seong-jin did not know the victims.
On the 29th of last month, police disclosed Kim Seong-jin's personal information. On the 1st of this month, he was sent to the prosecution for murder and attempted murder charges.
The Second Criminal Division of the Northern District Prosecutors' Office in Seoul (Director General Choi Jun-ho) indicted Kim Seong-jin for murder and attempted murder on that day. The prosecution stated, "The defendant committed what is known as 'murder with abnormal motivation,' and the victims and their families have had to endure unspeakable physical and mental suffering."
The prosecution explained that it identified the motive and methods of the crime as thoroughly as possible based on integrated psychological analysis by the Supreme Public Prosecutors' Office, profiling by the Seoul Police Agency, and closed-circuit television (CCTV) analysis, and has forwarded the case to court.
